English Market History
The English Market is one of the oldest of its kind. Trading as a market since 1788, it pre-dates most of the other markets like it. The English Market has provided a livelihood for thousands of Cork citizens with stalls being passed on from generation to generation. It has survived the famine, revolutions, wars, fire and economic decline. The market has adapted down through the years and now offers a larger range of produce than it did in the past. The English Market you see today was re-created in 1980 after it was destroyed by a large fire. The English Market attracts thousands of tourists each year including heads of state and celebrities, most notably Queen Elizabeth II of England in May, 2011.
Nowadays thanks to the heightened emphasis placed on health and nutrition, coupled with the popularity of travelling abroad, the market has developed into a cornucopia of exotic fruits, vegetables and meats; tastes and flavours to cater for a diverse population. Throughout the Market there is many multicultural stands. From small stands to large business stands the English Market provides culinary such as fruit and veg, butchers, world wild spices to different selection of sweets and pastries. If culinary does not interest you alternatively browse the many novelty shops, clothes shops and electrical shops.
