Spike Island has been voted as Europe’s leading tourist attraction at the World Travel Awards 2017 which is deemed the Oscars of the travel industry. Beating off stiff competition from the likes of the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace and the Colosseum to name but a few. The island has a rich history with over 1300 years of stories to tell, from its original days as a monastery in the 6th century to a 24 acre fortress to one of the world’s largest prisons in the 1850’s.
The island is just off the coast of beautiful Cobh and can be reached by a short and scenic ferry ride. Once safely on the island you will be given a guided tour including accounts all the way back to the 6th century where it started out as a monastery and was transformed to a fortress and then to Europe’s largest prison. The island is not exclusively for the enjoyment of history lovers as it is set on 104 acres of beautiful island scenery and with the ferry ride from Cobh it is a trip everyone is guaranteed to enjoy. There is also a children’s treasure hunt to keep the kids entertained.
After your long day trailing through the island, check in at the hotel where you will receive all the comforts of our newly refurbished Superior & Executive Bedrooms where you can relax and unwind…
