Spike Island

“An island full of lost memories” Spike Island has a rich history stretching back over 1300 years, from its days as a monastery to a 24-acre fortress to one of the world’s largest prisons.

Ferry to Spike Island

Should you have a couple of hours, make sure to take a ferry out to Spike Island to explore the former prison, fortress, monastery and villagers cottages. Take either a downloadable self-guided walking tour of this low-lying green island and its 18th-century artillery fortifications or join the highly enjoyable and informative guided tour.

Getting There

The boats depart from Kennedy pier in Cobh, Cork Harbour. Cobh town is 19km drive from Clayton Hotel Silver Springs and well worth a visit.
